EMDR therapy

Eye movement and desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a type of psychotherapy that helps relieve distress and shift negative self-beliefs resulting from traumatic experiences. It is evidence-based, heavily researched, and more structured than talk therapy sessions. This type of therapy is best known for its treatment of PTSD, and can also treat a range of issues, including attachment trauma, anxiety, and depression.

I’m an EMDR certified therapist, which means I’ve completed additional hours of training and consultation specifically in EMDR therapy for over two years. I’ve completed advanced training to treat PTSD, birth trauma, and grief and loss. Feel free to fill out my contact form if you feel EMDR may be right for you.

How is EMDR different from talk therapy?

EMDR is a multi-phased treatment that doesn’t require clients to talk in detail about past trauma. In the reprocessing phase, EMDR therapists guide clients to briefly focus on a traumatic memory while using a somatic technique called bilateral stimulation (BLS) to engage the body and mind. This helps decrease the vividness and emotion associated with traumatic memories.

Who can benefit from EMDR?

EMDR can treat a range of issues, including:

  • PTSD and other trauma and stress-related issues

  • Various forms of abuse or neglect

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, phobias

  • Performance anxiety

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss
